The first Serra club was formed in 1935 in Seattle , WA. Then, as now, the two great needs for the church were for informed Catholic lay leaders who understand and live their own Christian vocations to service, and for dedicated priests and religious.

The founding Serrans chose as the organization's patron Father Junipero Serra, the 18th-century Franciscan missionary to Mexico who was so influential in creating missions there.

Today there are more than 700 Serra Clubs in 36 countries with a total membership of more than 23,000 men, women and permanent deacons. Each Serra club is a member of both a national council and Serra international. Serra International which has an office located in Chicago, links Serra clubs around the world.

There is no Christian life in the secular world unless the layperson takes it there. The world needs dedicated farmers, executives, teachers and laborers who feel called to witness to the Gospels at work, in the home and in the community. Serra is devoted to developing that sense of call through nurturing spiritual growth and building knowledge of the faith. Often the club's activities focus on fostering vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

O God, Who wills not the death of a sinner but rather that he be converted and live grant we beseech you through the intercession of the Blessed Mary, ever Virgin, Saint Joseph, her spouse, Blessed Junipero Serra and all the saints an increase of laborers for Your Church fellow laborers with Christ to spend and consume themselves for souls through the same Jesus Christ Your Son Who lives and reigns with You In the unity of the Holy Spirit God forever and ever.
